Tell me a bit about your role. Mr. Landers: I cover a number of information governance related topics including archiving – both unstructured and structured data, including moving to the cloud; adopting retention policies eDiscovery and application retirement. None of this is mutually exclusive; most of these issues are integrated within companies. Another focus is storage – how to manage, where to invest now and in the long term.
What’s the biggest challenge in the market? Landers: Clients are most interested not in technology but how to develop and enforce retention policies and processes. They want to better understand the rules to follow, what are the best practices, how can they be successful. There are no easy answers to these, however; it depends on a number of factors, including the company’s content and its tolerance for implementing new policies and procedures. Another big challenge is managing all of this information. There is no slowing of the growth of all of this information; so how are we going to manage it- this doesn’t mean just reacting to events like audit and eDiscovery, but analyzing it and extracting value Unfortunately, we cannot delete our way to prosperity, today companies are focusing on limits for retention, but executing these policies and getting rid of content is still a huge barrier.
