Extract: A key ethical rule is competence, which requires that lawyers have the legal knowledge, skill, thoroughness, and preparation reasonably necessary to conduct the representation, according to ABA Model Rule 1.1. Recently added comments to the rule advise that “a lawyer should keep abreast of changes in the law and its practice, including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology.” Lawyers must also supervise the work of others to ensure it is completed in a competent manner (see ABA 5.1). Additionally, it is critical that lawyers do not reveal confidential or privileged client information (see ABA 1.6.)
