Cormack believes that his and Grossman’s CAL system will allow archivists to more quickly sort through documents to find those that can be released to the public, without exposing everything to human eyes.

The CAL system for the public Kaine archive prompts the user to type in a search term. It then shows the top-ranked document for relevance, and asks: “Is this document interesting to you?” CAL uses that feedback to refine its search. For instance, a search of “McGuire Woods” brings up a 2009 email from a lawyer at Venable to state officials recommending that the state’s port authority waive a conflict involving McGuireWoods.

“Just as the proliferation of electronic information presents challenges in civil litigation, it raises similar issues for the classification of government records, where there may be even fewer resources available for the task,” wrote Grossman in an email. “Advanced search technology—like our CAL system—shows great promise in separating open from restricted records and in identifying records relevant to particular information requests, facilitating more timely public access to information.”
