Extract from conversation led by Zach Abramowitz via ReplyAll

If you judge legal tech startups by the amount of funding they have raised, you get something of an incomplete picture. Take for instance a recent map of the legal tech space created by Tom Wilson at Seedcamp. Now before I criticize the map, let me say that it was very effective marketing tool because it got people talking about legal tech and raised Seedcamp’s profile as an investor in legal tech. A really good piece of content starts the conversation and Tom’s map did just that, so nicely done Tom (look for a conversation with Tom coming soon on ATL).

But, if I were to nitpick (which I am about to do), I would say that the list focuses too much on funding. First, legal tech companies (most of whom are private) do not always report their funding. Second, some of the fastest growing companies, like Kira Systems, never raised a dime in funding. In fact, many legal tech companies can begin earning revenue at a very early stage and grow the company without resorting to cash injections.

Case in point: Houston-based eDiscovery company CloudNine, which has bootstrapped its growth.
