Are eDiscovery indexing tools so slow because they never needed to be fast? Lawyers have been arguing that large collections and comprehensive search criteria are too much of a burden ever since they put the “e” in eDiscovery. As long as eDiscovery data sets are small, the market for speed doesn’t exist.

Or have eDiscovery data sets stayed so small because the indexing tools are so slow?   Does the time required to process more comprehensive collections, given the poor performance of the tools available, in fact create too much of a burden? Were the lawyers right, after all?

Sounds like a classic chicken and egg problem. Interesting to debate perhaps, but if you are responsible for managing your company’s data, the implications are too risky to ignore.

Talk to your eDiscovery service provider. Their profitability is vanishing, their market is consolidating big time, and in a search for more healthy margins, they are refocusing on the far larger markets of data governance, privacy, disposition, security and regulatory compliance…where the data sets are orders of magnitude larger, and the need for speed and scalability is far greater…and they are bringing the same slow tools with them.
